Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation (NDT) (https://academic.oup.com/ndt)

Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation (NDT) is one of the official publications of the ERA-EDTA. The NDT Editor-in-Chief is Professor Denis Fouque, Lyon, France. Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation: an international basic science and clinical renal journal (NDT) is the leading nephrology journal in Europe and renowned worldwide, devoted to original clinical and laboratory research in nephrology, dialysis and transplantation. The Editorial Board counts 80 internationally renowned experts in nephrology. All research articles have undergone peer review.

NDT received 2344 submissions (1985 original and 359 revised) in 2019. The final acceptance rate was 12%. The average time from submission to first editorial decision was 15 days. The time from acceptance to online publication was 5-6 weeks. Articles published in NDT  were downloaded over 4,100,000 times in 2019. The 2018 Impact Factor was 4.198. The mean Altmetrics score was 21.

NDT publishes original articles (on basic research, clinical research, dialysis, transplantation), special reports, invited reviews and editorials, and an educational section called ‘NDT Digest’ summarising an important renal topic in one educational page for renal fellows. Authors are now also allowed to submit a ‘research letter’ to NDT. All figures of invited papers are redesigned by a medical illustrator before publication. Authors can submit high-impact articles as fast track, which are then prioritised for publication. Submissions to NDT might be rejected at triage but authors can be asked to transfer their paper to CKJ (Clinical Kidney Journal – EIC: Professor Alberto Ortiz).

We offer our reviewers the possibility to get recognition for their reviews via Publons. We also encourage our authors to register for and submit their ORCID IDs alongside their papers. By registering for an ORCID ID, authors can be sure that their work will be properly attributed and referenced, and made easily discoverable. These ORCID IDs are then added to our proofs.

NDT is widely promoted on social media (Facebook, NDT app, Linkedin, Twitter, Instagram). We add Twitter handles to NDT submissions because sharing a paper via Twitter results in a higher Altmetrics score (the amount of attention an article has received online, in social media, and from news sites).

Each month, ‘Editor’s Choice’ articles are published on our homepage, a selection of
NDT articles is promoted in the ERA-EDTA newsletter, and important NDT articles are selected for press releases and blog posts. Each week we select the most impactful article that we then promote as ‘Article of the Week’. The NDT Editorial Board members weekly receive an overview of the most recent online NDT publications and of the most recently accepted NDT papers. To drive circulation, the editors are invited to promote/cite these papers as much as possible. Each year, the NDT associate editors summarize the top 2017, 2018, 2019… publications (in their area of expertise) in an editorial comment. This will attract readers and potentially lead to renewed interest and citations of these papers.

NDT also hosts videos on the journal’s homepage. Interesting papers are regularly selected for an accompanying video (using Panopto software), which are then together widely promoted.

In 2019, NDT published three Supplements: ‘ERA-EDTA Congress Abstract Book’, ‘ERBP Clinical practice guideline on peri- and postoperative care of arteriovenous fistulas and grafts for haemodialysis in adults’, and ‘Hyperkalemia: from pathophysiology to treatment’ (financially supported with an educational grant from Vifor Fresenius Medical Care Renal Pharma and AstraZeneca).

In 2019, the cardio-renal collection continued (a virtual journal including cardio-renal medicine articles from NDTCKJ and the European Society of Cardiology journals published by OUP). Important marketing initiatives in 2019 included: 'Best of 2018' (a collection of the most downloaded, most cited, and highest-Altmetric scoring NDT articles published in 2018), the World Kidney Day article collection, highly cited content / impact factor campaign, cardio-renal collection promotion, promotion of Publons, videos, and the ERA-EDTA journals app, conferences: ERA-EDTA Congress, ASN Kidney Week.
