EDUCATION AND CEPD

Following the many educational events that ERA-EDTA has been supporting since 2002, in 2019 the Association decided to renew its educational offer and to enhance the educational contribution given by its internal Scientific Bodies (i.e. Working Groups, YNP, the ERA-EDTA Registry, etc.). In 2019 the ERA-EDTA organised, for the very first time ever, the Scientific and Educational Interaction Day (SEID) on October 25-26 in Vienna (Austria): an exciting meeting which boasted educational lectures focused on systemic diseases that affect the kidney (ANCA-associated vasculitis, lupus nephritis, anti-GBM disease), ethical aspects of using genetic results in clinical daily practice and its implications but also stimulating discussions on patients and nephrologists’ considerations on the choice among hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and transplantation. The event was preceded by the Satellite ‘New Drug’ Symposium designed to be a fully educational experience with some ‘industry focus’.

A consistent part of the meeting is devoted to vascular access which included a practical session involving demonstrations of ultrasound scanning and fistula imaging on real patients. All participants (especially the young clinicians) had the chance to practise imaging under the supervision and guidance of experts.

The event was also live-streamed with over 1,200 users joining via web. The webcast of SEID is also available in the Virtual Meeting Section of the ERA-EDTA website.

Prof. Marianne Verhaar (The Netherlands) has been elected Chair of the newly formed Continuous Education & Professional Development (CEPD) Committee, taking care of the educational activities to be held the first day of the ERA-EDTA Annual Congresses.

On June 13, 2019 in Budapest, 13 courses have been organised covering the full spectrum of nephrology. Almost 3,300 participants attended these sessions.

Some ERA-EDTA Working Groups and Bodies organised individual educational meetings:
