![]() Diabetes and Obesity in Renal Disease in 2019, an update
The fast growing prevalence of obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes is an important challenge in nephrology. These entities are deeply interrelated. In fact, obesity and metabolic syndrome frequently precede diabetes. Also, overweight, obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, pre-diabetes and diabetes are risk factors for renal disease. All these topics will be discussed in the new meeting of DIABESITY, official Working Group of the ERA-EDTA.
Do not miss the Satellite ‘New Drug’ Symposium at the SEID in Vienna
The Symposium is preceding the SEID (Vienna, Austria) on October 25, 2019. This half-day symposium is designed to be a fully educational experience with some ‘industry focus’: key European speakers will contribute in the sessions providing updates on recent studies related to the treatment of anaemia, hyperkalaemia and diabetes in CKD.

Changes in clinical indicators related to the transition from dialysis to kidney transplantation—data from the ERA–EDTA Registry Patients with end-stage kidney disease need renal replacement therapy (RRT) to maintain the balance of fluid and metabolic components in the body. Although kidney transplantation provides better patient survival and quality of life, most patients need to start RRT on dialysis treatment because of the lack of available kidney donors.
ERA-EDTA for research and growth of young professionals Starting from 2019, the ERA-EDTA Long Term Fellowships will be assigned to competitive research proposals by the ERA-EDTA Working Groups /Committees, with the aim to simultaneously finance the most worthy projects and to favour young researchers’ growth. The ERA-EDTA is happy to announce that the following projects have been granted with a Long Term Fellowship in 2019. – The failing renal graft an ERA-EDTA initiated randomized trial (submitted by DESCARTES in collaboration with EUDIAL and IWG) – Identification of prognostic factors for patients with ANCA associated vasculitis (submitted by IWG in collaboration with DESCARTES) – Dietary intake and adherence to dietary recommendations in European dialysis patients: the diet-HD study (submitted by ERN) – Concerted Action in Renal Osteosdystrophy (CAiRO) (submitted by CKD-MBD)
![]() ![]() Run for Kidneys in Budapest
The ERA-EDTA is very pleased to announce that the proceeds of the RUN for KIDNEYS 2019, which took place on June 14 in Budapest, were donated to the Hungarian Nephrology Foundation which is supporting the National Kidney Programme (launched by the Hungarian Society of Nephrology) which aims at promoting the knowledge on kidney diseases, prevention and treatment among the general population (including children and young adults) in general and kidney patients in particular. Mr. Gergő Mezei, transplanted athlete, came in the first place in the male category. 77 participants registered for the Run. The Association would like to thank all of them for supporting this important initiative.
Budapest: fact and figures!
The 56th ERA-EDTA Congress, under the presidency of Prof. George Reusz and Prof. Carmine Zoccali, was highly successful. Altogether, 3.288 people attended the CEPD courses (on June 13), 9.129 people the congress and 1.833 abstracts were accepted and published. Click here and have a look at the Congress figures!
