Summary Reports from 55th ERA-EDTA Congress Inflammation in crystal nephropathies Presented by Hans-Joachim Anders ![]() Deposits of crystals, misfolded proteins, or airborne nanoparticles or microparticles can cause diverse acute or chronic organ injuries. Crystal-associated diseases, although with diverse clinical presentations, share several molecular and cellular pathomechanisms, and are usually referred to as the ‘crystallopathies’. According to their predominant pathologic mechanism, Mulay and Anders suggested a classification of crystal-related or microparticle-related disorders in the three categories: 1) acute necroinflammation, 2) chronic tissue remodeling leading to tissue atrophy and scarring, and 3) obstruction of ducts, cavities, or vessels by large crystal masses, calculi, or stones.

Klotho and endocrine FGFs – marker of CKD progression and cardiovascular complications? Presented by Makoto Kuro-o ![]() Klotho, the Greek goddess who spins the thread of life, has become popular among nephrologists, as the genes named after her encode co-receptors for hormones that play critical roles in the pathophysiology of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The Klotho gene was discovered in 1997 when mice with serendipitous silencing of this gene developed premature ageing syndrome. The Klotho proteins (αKlotho and βKlotho) are essential components of endocrine fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) complexes, as they are required for the high-affinity binding of FGF19, FGF21 and FGF23 to their cognate FGFRs. Alpha-Klotho is predominantly expressed in the distal convoluted tubules of the kidneys whereas βKlotho is located in fat tissue and the liver.
