Summary Reports from 56th ERA-EDTA Congress

The Concept of Incremental Dialysis

Presented by Carlo Basile

Summary1

Until recently the thrice-weekly hemodialysis (HD) regimen has been widely accepted as a standard prescription, even though there were no randomized controlled trials to assess whether less frequent treatments would be inadequate. It is reasonable to assume that the routine fixed thrice-weekly HD dose may even be harmful to patients with residual kidney function (RKF) as it may contribute to its accelerated loss. Thus, a concept of incremental dialysis has been established as a possible alternative for patients with preserved diuresis and end-stage renal failure in need of HD.

Dietary Acid Reduction and Kidney Protection: Adjunctive Benefits When Done
with Fruits and Vegetables

Presented by Donald E. Wesson

Summary2

High acid-containing diets play a role in the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Western diets, which are generally high in animal and grain products, are rich in acid precursors, but are comparatively low in fruits and vegetables, most of which when metabolized produce alkali. Therefore, it has been suggested that dietary acid reduction with base-producing fruits and vegetables may improve metabolic acidosis in patients with CKD and slow the decline rate of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).
