Prognostic value of hypochloremia versus hyponatremia among patients with chronic kidney disease—a retrospective cohort study
In heart failure patients, serum chloride is a stronger predictor of adverse outcomes than serum sodium. During a cohort study of 2661 patients with stages 3-5 CKD, Kubota et al. also found that serum chloride outperformed serum sodium in predicting the risk of mortality or cardiovascular events. This study highlights the prognostic importance of hypochloraemia, even in patients with normal serum sodium levels. The paper is accessible free of charge until this Sunday at 23.59 (UK time).
