Renal disease in Alström syndrome starts early on and progresses rapidly, leading to a high prevalence of advanced CKD in young people.

In heart failure patients, serum chloride is a stronger predictor of adverse outcomes than serum sodium. During a cohort study of 2661 patients with stages 3-5 CKD, Kubota et al. also found that serum chloride outperformed serum sodium in predicting the risk of mortality or cardiovascular events. This study highlights the prognostic importance of hypochloraemia, even in patients with normal serum sodium levels.

UEMS Renal Section and Boards, and the ERA-EDTA Council are pleased to announce the European Certificate Examination in Nephrology to be held on February 27, 2019. The aim of this exciting development is to further unify nephrology training across Europe.
Applications for the 2019 examination will be accepted between November 7, 2018 and December 5, 2018.
