![]() ERA-EDTA Congress 2018 survey results: How quickly can you diagnose a rare disease
Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is an extremely rare, life-threatening, progressive disease that often has a genetic component. aHUS is characterised by systemic thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), predominantly affecting the renal microvasculature. The neurological and kidney-related signs and symptoms of aHUS overlap with those of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). However, unlike aHUS, TTP is primarily an autoimmune disorder in which the presence of an inhibitory autoantibody results in a severe deficiency of ADAMTS13.
The survey conducted during ERA-EDTA 2018 highlights typical problems encountered in clinical practice in differentiating between TMA and TTP and explores clinicians’ treatment preferences. Take a look at the results here.

Pre-dialysis blood pressure measurements misclassify hypertension in about 1/3 of hemodialysis patients
A new NDT study shows that `normal´ pre-dialysis blood pressure measurement is not reliable. “Without performing extended ambulatory BP recordings (44h - 48h) we are ready to accept an error rate of about 30% in the diagnosis of hypertension in dialysis patients, a highly vulnerable patient group with a dramatically elevated cardiovascular risk. This is why EURECA-m recommends ambulatory blood pressure monitoring as the gold standard for the diagnosis of hypertension in hemodialysis patients”, explains Carmine Zoccali, President of the ERA-EDTA.
