Proper screening and management of CKD bone complications are crucial to improve clinical outcomes. The CME on the “Role of bone biopsy in clinical practice” organised by the EUropean Renal OsteoDystrophy (EU-ROD), a Scientific Committee chaired by Prof. Pieter Evenepoel and acting under the umbrella of the ERA-EDTA Working Group on CKD-MBD, will be organized in Leuven (Belgium) on January 19, 2018 and aims at providing an update on the clinical assessment of ROD anno 2018 by means of state-of-the-art lectures by key opinion leaders and interactive clinic-pathological sessions. Read the latest CKJ article What to do with the AVF after kidney transplantation? After kidney transplantation, the question often posed is whether or not a functional arteriovenous fistula (AVF) should be left in place. Available data are insufficient and therefore the approach is still subject to debate, as the authors show in their paper, lately published in CKJ. Indications for fistula closure include arterial steal, left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and high-risk cardiovascular status. In order to make the right decision, it is necessary to carefully evaluate the potential cardiovascular complications due to the significant haemodynamic changes caused by AVF and the risk of transplant dysfunction following AVF ligation (involving a return to dialysis). Pre-operative assessment of the vascular and cardiopulmonary situation, including experimental occlusion of the AVF, is therefore highly important.
