The course is aimed at providing theoretical and practical training in the following fields of nephrology:
- urinalysis and urinary sediment
- clinical nephrology
- kidney transplant
- mineral metabolism in the renal patient

Classes are designed to stimulate discussion and interactivity between the participants and the faculty members.

To achieve this aim, in the morning the participants will be divided in small groups in order to follow the various clinical activities of the unit.

In the afternoons of the first 3 or 4 days a theoretical and practical course on urinalysis and urinary microscopy will be held. This will be based on both lectures and examination of true urinary sediment samples by means of a phase-contrast microscope, equipped with a co-observation device for all participants.

In the following afternoons, several clinical cases concerning the above listed topics will be presented and discussed. Particular focus will be put on diagnostic and therapeutic issues.
This part of the course will also include the direct examination of renal biopsies (on both native and transplanted kidneys) at a microscope equipped with a co-observation device for all participants.
