Dear colleagues and friends,

I have been asked by the council of the ERA-EDTA to briefly explain my reasons for wanting to stand for election to the ERA-EDTA council in the forthcoming June 2005 election.

As many of you know, I am a relatively young Portuguese nephrologist who trained for seven years in the USA where I did my Internal Medicine residency in New York and my fellowship in Nephrology at UCLA under the supervision of Professor Jack Coburn. I passed the American Boards and am American Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology.

I am currently a nephrologist at the university hospital and assistant professor of medicine at the medical school of Porto, where I took my doctorate. Currently, I am also the vice president of the Portuguese Society of Nephrology.

Having trained in the USA, I feel that I have much to contribute to the European Renal Association. I believe I can bring the rich experience of a medical education in the US, obviously very different to the European tradition, to the council of the association.

In addition, my intention is to become involved in the ERA-EDTA's educational activities, consolidating and extending the training efforts underway. My USA background and knowledge of research – particularly in the field of bone disease – equips me for this area. Training and education in nephrology needs to be standardised throughout European countries. This is an urgent task for the near future, and one in which I would very much like to be involved.

My very best regards,

Prof. João M. Frazão
