| Invitation to the XLVII ERA-EDTA Congress - II DGfN Congress |
|
|
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
It is our great pleasure to invite you to Munich in June 2010 to participate in the joint congress of the ERA-EDTA and the German Society of Nephrology. The societies have joined forces to produce a meeting of outstanding scientific quality combined with an extremely rich cultural experience.
As a focal point between East and West and North and South, Munich is situated in the centre of Europe and can be reached in the shortest possible time thanks to the excellent infrastructure. Germany’s second-biggest airport guarantees excellent continental and intercontinental air connections. The venue of the meeting, the Internationales Congress Center München (ICM), is a modern convention centre that provides state-of-the art facilities for a large congress but at the same time you can reach the city centre within 15 minutes, with the U rail system.
The Scientific Committee has worked very hard in order to ensure a wide choice of lectures and symposia covering the various aspects of basic and clinical Nephrology as well as the most recent researches in the field. Special attention will be given to young researchers and nephrologists and to late breaking clinical trials. CME sessions will be offered just before the official opening of the congress and an extraordinary number of travel grants for young nephrologists will be available.
More than 2370 abstracts have been submitted to this meeting from countries all over the world. This is the highest number ever received for an ERA-EDTA congress and obviously it can only mean that it will be a success!
The Industry Exhibition has achieved unexpected results as well: all the available spaces have been sold out since the end of January 2010. More than 4300 square meters have been allocated with 200 square meters dedicated to publishers and non-profit organizations.
The Industry will also provide a huge variety of topics in 16 lunch symposia and 2 pre-dinner events organized by international leading medical companies.
Munich is one of the most vibrant and modern German cities, with the charm of the Bavarian culture and an outstanding number of castles, breathtaking churches and museums. Visit the baroque Nymphenburg palace, the English Garden and have a large Bavarian beerstein at the famous Hofbräuhaus.
Munich is just a few steps away from some of the most wonderful castles and romantic churches (Pfaffenwinkel) from the late Bavarian king Maximilian II.
Your way may take you South to Oberammergau passing the Ettal monastery while heading towards Castle Linderhof and the world famous Schloss Neu-Schwanstein. From there the Romantische Strasse can take you to the Frankfurt airport on your way to your home destination.

In 2010 the ERA-EDTA will hold very important elections both within the ERA-EDTA Council as well as for a new Ethics Committee. |
| |
|
| Council Elections |
| |
Three Ex-Officio Council Members must be nominated at the up-coming ERA-EDTA Council Meeting and then be elected at the ERA-EDTA members during the General Assembly (Munich – June 28, 2010): they will take part in the future Council Meetings without vote for one year and will then officially take office in 2011 during the Prague Congress. These will be the ERA-EDTA President, the ERA-EDTA Secretary-Treasurer and the NDT Editor-in-Chief.
If you wish to be a candidate for one of these positions you must have been an ERA-EDTA Full member for at least five consecutive years; furthermore, should you wish to apply for the position of President, you must also have been elected as an Ordinary Council Member (past or current).
Two Ordinary Council Members must also be elected at the General Assembly in Munich. In this case, should you wish to be a candidate, you must simply be a Full ERA-EDTA Member.
The deadline for sending your candidature is February 26, 2010. It must be sent to Prof. Adrian Covic (ERA-EDTA secretary-Treasurer) together with a picture, a short CV (1-2 pages), two letters from ERA-EDTA Full Members supporting your candidature and the transparency declaration form (http://www.era-edta.org/images/TransparencyDeclarationform.pdf). |

Ethics Committee |
| |
At the last ERA-EDTA General Assembly in Milan (Italy - May 25, 2009), it was decided that the ERA-EDTA needed a permanent Ethics Committee to mainly make sure that all the activities of the Association follow the rules of the Constitution and Council Regulations. There are 5 available positions in this committee.
All full members, who have been active ERA-EDTA members for at least 10 consecutive years, and who wish to apply to become a member for this committee must send a written statement to the ERA-EDTA Secretary-Treasurer. This must be accompanied by supporting letters obtained from two other full members of the Association. All candidacy letters must also include a picture of the candidate, a short CV (1-2 pages) and the transparency declaration form (http://www.era-edta.org/images/TransparencyDeclarationform.pdf).
The deadline is February 26, 2010. |

World Kidney Day is an annual occasion to raise awareness of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The theme for WKD this year is ‘Protect your kidneys, Control diabetes’ with the aim of raising awareness of diabetes as the leading cause of chronic kidney disease.
Similar to the highly successful 2009 European Kidney Health Alliance seminar on CKD and hypertension, this year EKHA and WKD are joining forces to organise a lunch seminar to pursue critical advocacy campaigns on CKD and diabetes.
