Glasgow 2006: a bench-to-bedside approach
A report from Prof. P. Ronco, Chairman of the Scientific Committee
The Scientific Committee has established what we feel is a strong, attractive programme for the XLIII Congress of the ERA-EDTA in Glasgow. The programme covers all aspects of Nephrology including clinical and basic Nephrology, Hypertension, Dialysis and Transplantation. It includes 3 Plenary Lectures, 28 Symposia, 15 Mini Lectures, Literature Updates in all fields of Nephrology, and Hands-on-Courses. Symposia will highlight the new trends in translational Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation.

The Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Centre (ICEC), seat of the XLII ERA-EDTA Congress |
Istanbul is proud to have hosted the XLII ERA-EDTA Congress
From Prof. K. Serdengecti, XLII Congress President
I am extremely pleased and proud to announce that the XLII ERA-EDTA Congress, which took place on 4-7 June 2005 against the background of an enchanting host city that offered a combination of beautiful weather, splendid scenic beauty, rich and impressive history, cultural wealth and diversity, together with a most vibrant modern soul and warmest hospitality has indeed been a great success both scientifically and socially that broke the ERA-EDTA records for abstract submission (1959) and participation (over 5800 delegates).

Invitation to Glasgow
From Dr. J. Fox, President of the XLIII Congress
On behalf of the organising committee, I should like to issue a cordial invitation to the XLIII Congress of the ERA-EDTA, which will be held at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) in Glasgow on July 15-18th 2006. The SECC is close to the centre of Glasgow and includes a striking new building (affectionately nicknamed ‘The Armadillo’), which houses the main 3000-seat auditorium. There are also numerous other halls and meeting rooms and the whole complex is easily large enough to house all the activities of the ERAEDTA.

Introducing the QUEST Initiative
From Prof. C. Zoccali, Chairman of the ERA-EDTA Registry
The QUEST (QUality European STudies) initiative is not a research project on its own but an ambitious framework aimed at collecting data on Clinical indicators, monitor guidelines adherence and form the basis for establishing well pondered benchmarks. An important goal of the project is that of helping European investigators joining their forces to pursue common projects based on an enriched ERA-EDTA database. The task of establishing high-quality clinical databases, including major Clinical Indicators, is diffi cult because these measures pose standardization problems.
