Cross talk between EUTox and EURECA-m from Ziad A. Massy Board Member

The uremic syndrome is attributed to the progressive retention of a large number of compounds, so-called uremic solutes, which under normal conditions are excreted by the healthy kidneys. Their accumulation may have a negative impact on many body functions resulting in a gradual, endogenous intoxication. Thus, the identification, classification and characterization of uremic toxins seem of utmost importance in chronic kidney disease (CDK).

The European Uremic Toxin Working Group (EUTox) is bringing together renowned clinicians and basic scientists who work on the issue of uremic toxicity. EUTox is going to celebrate its 10th anniversary in the second half of 2010. Founded in October 1999, the group was launched by three of its members Raymond Vanholder, Bernd Stegmayr and Ulrich Baurmeister under the umbrella of the European Society of Artificial Organs (ESAO). In September 2000, EUTox convened for its first meeting. Today, EUTox is a working group endorsed by both ERA-EDTA and ESAO and involves 24 European research institutes exploring uremic toxicity. Their goal is to stimulate collaborative research related to solute retention and removal in CDK and to the deleterious impact of those solutes on biological and biochemical systems. EUTox has published a striking list of articles, position papers and reviews and set up an interactive database providing and collecting information on the biological significance of uremic toxins. At this moment, 106 common papers (publications to which at least two EUTox groups participated) have been published. EUTox is primarily interested to see which toxins need to be removed in order to prevent vascular damage.
