Welcome to the second newsletter of EURECA-m. I hope you enjoy it, and are now actively planning your stay in Prague for the ERA-EDTA Congress. The main thrust of this newsletter is an article from Carmine about an important issue over taxonomy and definitions of cardiorenal syndrome - and news of a nice article coming out in KI soon - and also, updates on Congress activities and EURECA-m research.

The Facebook activity is alive and well as an idea, and we should aim to implement this soon now; we can let you know by email, and in the next Newsletter.

Taxonomy and cardiorenal syndrome

The sequencing of the human genome in 2003 and the development of the “omics” technology was the dawn of a new era in human biology and medicine. This technology represents a unique opportunity for a system biology-based approach to the study of human diseases. Genomics, proteomics and metabolomics now allow the study of cardio-renal risk factors in the evolution of diseases in the integrated view envisioned by Guyton. The potential and the complexity of the new approach for the study of heart failure is nicely illustrated in a recent Circulation paper by Gilles W De Keulenaer (1).

Dear EURECA-m Members,

Please be informed that last March 2011 the World Kidney Day & State-of-Art Symposium took place in Madrid, Spain.

During the World Kidney Day, a symposium named “Don’t let your kidneys break your heart” took place, and the Chair Prof. Alberto Martinez-Castelao made a special thanks to the EURECA-m Working Group; the following day there was another symposium named “Clinical Advances at the Heart of Cardio-Renal Syndrome”.

Please click here to visualize both programs.

Both symposiums had a great success and the first one has been transmitted in more than 30 countries with the participation of more than thousand nephrologists, dieticians and cardiologists.
