Leuven, June 15, 2015

Dear colleague,

We would like to cordially invite you to participate to the forthcoming CME “Update in  vascular calcification and calciphylaxis” organized by the CKD-MBD working group of the ERA-EDTA.

It is increasingly acknowledged that mineral and bone disorders contribute to the excessively high cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality observed in patients with chronic kidney disease.  Information on the prevalence, severity, pathophysiology, and clinical relevance of cardiovascular calcification, one of the hallmarks of CKD-MBD, is rapidly accruing and asks for a regular update. In this CME, we present a literature overview, “The year in vascular calcification”, and try to give answers to burning and clinically relevant questions related to cardiovascular calcification in chronic kidney disease: Is vascular calcification clinically relevant in CKD?, What’s new in the pathophysiology of uremic cardiovascular calcification?; Do we have to screen for vascular calcification  in CKD?; Is vascular calcification modifiable in CKD?

Calciphylaxis or Calcifying Uremic Arteriolopathy (CUA) is a rare disease. It is associated with impressive comorbidity and mortality and remains a diagnostic and especially therapeutic challenge for every clinician. In the present CME, we will give an update of the epidemiology, pathophysiology and treatment of CUA and present “late-breaking” information based on the conclusions of a European expert meeting that preceded the current CME meeting.

The meeting will take place in the Grand Beguinage of Leuven, a well preserved and completely restored historical quarter in the south of downtown Leuven.  Leuven is a University city situated 20 km east to Brussels. Approximately 4 times per hour, direct trains connect Brussels Airport ( with downtown Leuven (travel time: 25 minutes). A more expensive alternative is to take a taxi (approx.. 70 euro).
