CKD-MBD

News

As of June 2015 the number of members of our WG reached 304.

The WG Board Members met in London, on May 28th, just before the 52nd ERA-EDTA Congress, to plan future activities.

Activity of our WG at the 52nd ERA-EDTA Congress (May 28th to 31st) was remarkable, in particular during the organized CME course and the Symposia on MBD. Attendance at these meetings was very good, pointing to the high interest in CKD-MDB. Notably, our Symposium “CKD-MBD: Update 2015” had 975 attendees, thus resulting as the 5th most attended session of the Congress (see slide n°16 of the presentation available at:  http://www.era-edta2015.org/FACTS_AND_FIGURES_2015.pdf).  These results strengthen us in preparing the new CMD courses for 2016 (more news to come in the coming months).

Our WG is represented in the KDIGO committee that is preparing an update of the 2009 guidelines (first results will be presented at ASN by Professor Mary Leonard in San Diego).

The ERA-EDTA council recently updated the rules for WGs (see pdf file “ERA-EDTA Scientific Group Regulations” at: http://www.era-edta.org/page-12-36-0-36-eraedtascientificworkinggroups.html).

Current and upcoming activities
Publications:
The position paper on the use of Cinacalcet in CKD following the results of the Evolve study has been published on Nephrol Dial Transplant (see Literature review).
A review paper, partly narrative and partly systematic in collaboration with Cochrane Group, on the role of Magnesium in renal patients is currently under revision in an important journal.
Cooperation:
Contacts are made with the European Society of Pediatric Nephrology in order to develop common specific lines of clinical research in the field of CKD-MBD, spanning both pediatric and adult nephrology. In addition, there are contacts with our colleagues from Japan, that also aim at founding a similar Working Group.
WG Activities:
Our WG was very active during the very successful 52nd ERA-EDTA Congress in London and involved with one CME course and two Symposia.

As already announced, the WG is planning to develop a bone-biopsy network, joining nephrologists, endocrinologists and pathologists (Coordinator: Pieter Evenepoel). An internet questionnaire is underway to recognize potentially interested Centers. The project aims at increasing collection of bone samples in renal patients to improve knowledge on the role of bone in systemic disease.
