Japanese Society of Nephrology and ERA-EDTA: a successful cross cultural exchange!

Last year (2015), the Japanese Society of Nephrology (JSN) and the ERA-EDTA decided to sign a collaboration agreement in order to further consolidate and intensify the very good cooperation of both societies and, thus, to build a stronger bond between Japanese and European Nephrology. This year, two successful JSN-ERA/EDTA joint symposia took place at ERA-EDTA congress in Vienna (Austria) and at JSN congress in Yokohama (Japan) respectively.  Like ERA-EDTA, in the recent years JSN has placed a high premium on international relationships and collaborations. The JSN is also deeply committed to educating young nephrologists in developing countries in Asia through its Continuing Medical Education project.

New therapeutic targets in systemic amyloidosis: A new “treatment era” on the horizon?
Recently, substantial improvements in the understanding of the molecular underpinnings of systemic amyloidosis have unveiled different key steps in the amyloidogenic cascade. Among them are native conformation of the amyloidogenic precursor, inhibitors of fibrillogenesis, amyloid fibril disruptors and promoters of amyloid clearance – and all of them can be valid therapeutic targets for innovative pharmacological strategies. Besides, old drugs with newly recognized anti-amyloid properties are currently being tested in the clinical setting. Might these approaches dramatically improve the outcome of the patients? Find out about the future of amyloidosis treatment here.

Measuring GFR by iohexol as a new diagnostic standard?
A reliable assessment of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is of paramount importance in clinical practice as well as epidemiological and clinical research settings. Measured GFR is the only valuable test to confirm or confute the status of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Currently, the GFR is calculated from the results of the blood creatinine test, the patient´s age, body size and gender. Pierre Delanaye and colleagues recommend to use iohexol plasma clearance instead to measure GFR. The advantages would be simplicity, low cost, stability and low interlaboratory variation.

Tweet Congress

Who was tweeting at the last ERA-EDTA Congress?

The ERA-EDTA Congress in Vienna was covered on Twitter thanks to the help of two young Spanish Nephrologists, Dr Beatriz Fernandez-Fernandez (@beaff26) and Dr Maria Vanessa Perez-Gomez (@perezgomezmv). Beatriz is a YNP (The ERA-EDTA Young Nephrologists’ Platform) member and has a prestigious Joan Rodes physician-scientist contract at the IIS-Fundacion Jimenez Diaz in Madrid. Maria Vanessa is Chief resident at the same institution. They posted more than 120 tweets and reached more than 200,000 users (238,617 to be precise!).
The ERA-EDTA thanks Beatriz and Maria Vanessa for their contribution towards the visibility of the science and education presented at the 2016 ERA-EDTA Congress in Vienna.
