Chronic Kidney Disease: everyone’s concern

850 million people worldwide are affected by kidney disease. This worrying figure was published last June by the three leading nephrology societies (ASN, ISN and ERA-EDTA) – and it continues to rise at an alarming rate. The leading preventable causes of chronic kidney disease, which carries significant health burden, are diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. The risk of death, in people that have reached advanced stages and suffer from cardiovascular disease particularly in the advanced stages, is drastically increased. Prevention of chronic kidney disease is a global concern and the fight against preventable causes must be intensified. ERA-EDTA has published a leaflet with practical tips to help reduce the risk of developing conditions which could lead to chronic kidney disease.

Survey on the management of atrial fibrillation in patients with chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease
The European Renal and Cardiovascular medicine (EURECA-m) Working Group of the ERA-EDTA together with the Scientific Initiatives Committee of the European Heart Rhythm Association designed this survey with the purpose of assessing the common “real world” practice in the management of patients with both atrial fibrillation (excluding those with prosthetic mechanical heart valves or mitral stenosis) and chronic kidney disease in European Renal and Cardiology Units. Completion of the survey requires less than 10 minutes of your time. The results of the survey will be used to implement future research initiatives to be conducted across Europe and tackle the difficult issue of managing atrial fibrillation in patients with chronic kidney disease.

NDT - Article of the week
Sodium bicarb catheter lock solution
This study suggests that sodium bicarbonate could be used as a lock solution for dialysis catheters. It is cheap, readily available and sodium bicarbonate is superior to saline in terms of reduction in catheter related thrombosis and catheter associated infection.
The paper is accessible free of charge until this Sunday at 23.59 (UK time). Do not miss it!
