The ESPN/ERA-EDTA 2016 Registry Report is now available!

Every year, the ESPN/ERA-EDTA Registry collects data on RRT via the national renal registries in Europe.  So far, data have been collected for nine subsequent years.

In 2016, the overall RRT incidence was 5.6 per million age-related population (pmarp) and ranged from 0.0, as no patients started RRT in that year, to 15.5 pmarp.

The prevalence was 34.9 and also showed a wide range that went from 9.7 to 80.4 pmarp. A five-year survival rate of 94.2% was calculated following the start of RRT. Most patients died as a result of infections.

G1 APOL1 risk variants are frequent and are associated with hypertension-attributed nephropathy in Central Africa
Sub-Saharan Africans exhibit a higher frequency of chronic kidney disease (CKD) than other populations. A new case-control study published in CKJ shows that G1 APOL1 risk variants are frequent and are associated with hypertension-attributed nephropathy in Democratic Republic of the Congo. These results may explain why there is a heavy burden of CKD in this particular population. The fact that the APOL1 G2/G2 genotype was absent in CKD individuals living in endemic areas regarding the Trypanosoma brucei gambiense infection in Kinshasa suggests the possibility that APOL1 G2/G2 susceptibility to severe Trypanosoma brucei gambiense infection might interfere with reproductive fitness and reduce the frequencies of these variants in sub-Saharan Africa.
