ASSOCIATION

EKHA

EKHA conducts a survey on patient choice and education for renal replacement therapy

European Kidney Health Alliance (EKHA), an association of European kidney patients, foundations, nurses and physicians, undertook a European survey in several EU countries assessing the availability and information on various renal replacement therapies.

In March-October 2017, a survey was organised in 9 EU countries (UK, France, Spain, Slovenia, Lithuania, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal) to assess the availability and patient information on various renal replacement therapies, with specific attention to the more sustainable strategies (home hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, transplantation). The responses were matched with those from medical professionals on similar questions. The preliminary results were presented at the meeting of the European renal nurses association (European Dialysis and Transplant Nurse Association-European Renal Care Association/EDTNA-ERCA). Click here to see the slide presentation. Please be advised that the data were presented while the survey was still ongoing and are not definitive. Final analysis will follow. However, some general conclusions can already be drawn: 1) there is substantial heterogeneity among countries; 2) in no country all options are offered at 100%; 3) there is a lack of patient education for sustainable options; 4) sustainable options are not offered because of lack of interest by the management of hospitals or providers; 5) free choice is hampered by financial drivers; 6) the opinion of the patient and his/her family are often neglected.
