Interactive Workshops on Communication at the 54th ERA-EDTA Congress

‘Interactive workshops’, a brand new event format, will be introduced at the upcoming 54th ERA-EDTA Congress, to be held on June 3-6, 2017 in Madrid (Spain). Two interactive sessions (one for doctors and one for nurses) are scheduled on June 3 (at 10.45-11.45 and 14.15 -16.15 respectively). This is a unique opportunity to learn various techniques to improve the communication with the patients. The innovative thing about these sessions is that the knowledge is not transported in a “dry” lecture-style but acted out by two professional actors right before your eyes, to enhance learning experience and content retention.

DASH-ing toward improved renal outcomes

The DASH diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, potassium, calcium, magnesium and fibers, while it is low in saturated fat, sodium, added sweeteners and other sugars and additives such as inorganic phosphorus. Therefore, the authors of this NDT article argue that it might help to prevent chronic kidney diseases. The most conspicuous positive benefits of a DASH diet would be its effects on blood pressure lowering, besides its beneficial effects on lipid profiles. The authors hope, “policymakers of various countries to recognize the long-term benefits of healthy diets, and to implement regulations that make such interventions possible”. But surely the more effective and faster way might be to tell your pre-dialysis patients that this diet might postpone their dependence on RRT for a few months or even years.

“Global Burden of Disease” study shows increasing rates for death and DALYs due to CKD

Since 1990, CKD has been included in the list of non-communicable diseases investigated by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study. This article by Kitty J. Jager and Simon D.S. Fraser gives an outline of the place of CKD in the GBD ranking of non-communicable diseases and the change over time. The result is quite shocking: Whereas age-standardized death and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) rates due to non-communicable diseases in general have been declining, such favourable trends do not exist for CKD. Altogether the GBD reports indicate increasing rates for death and DALYs due to CKD with huge variation across the globe.

The e-campus at ERA-EDTA 2017 Congress - bringing Digital Education to Life

Like everything else in Healthcare, Scientific Education is highly affected by digital technology.

ERA-EDTA has been continuously providing the medical community with new and innovative e-services to increase the educational impact of its Annual Congress.

As a registered delegate, how should you best use digital tools and services to meet individual needs, without needing to become a technical wizard, or spend too much time on non-essential tasks?

To help delegates make the most of their participation, a dedicated e-campus will be available at the 54th ERA-EDTA Congress, where delegates can learn about, and engage with, the digital service portfolio such as ENP, the new European Nephrology Portal, standard services like E-materials to access speaker slides, and also new services like the Summary Builder which allows delegates to create a slide summary report in a few clicks.

A team of experienced staff will be available to present these free services.

What portfolio of services is covered by the e-campus?
